Question

A request to add the Multimodal Complex Treatment of the Newly Diagnosed Patient with Diabetes Mellitus procedure.

These are children with newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus who are being set on intensified insulin therapy. The condition requires comprehensive medical care with the setting of an appropriate insulin regimen, insulin doses in conjunction with diet, patient education by the physician, nurse educator, and nutrition assistant. An improperly adjusted patient has poor metabolic compensation of the disease with increased risk of acute and chronic complications, morbidity and mortality. With adequate treatment, this risk is low. Adequate adjustment of the DM patient to an intensified insulin regimen requires hospitalization of the pediatric patient in a center with adequate staffing, technical equipment, and experience of the attending staff. We propose the creation and addition of performance 8v181.04 Multimodal comprehensive treatment of the newly diagnosed pediatric patient with diabetes mellitus to Table K60-6

Answer

The procedure has not been added, given that the clinical situations listed can be reported using procedure group 8v181.0- (currently already included in table K60-6). In order to standardize reporting and provide clarity for providers, the Coding Rules for that procedure group will be expanded.
